Colorful jewel tone silk kantha blanket. From West Bengal, India.
This kantha blanket is made using vintage silk saris, a traditional mode of dress for Indian women. The saris are sorted out by color, cut into squares and patch worked together. A black cotton fabric is added as backing for durability. Next the long running stitches, the ‘kantha’ stitches, are added by hand in varying colors.
It is this kantha stitch that has been passed down for centuries among Bengali women. Historically the long running stitch technique was used on layers of worn clothing, the stitch holding the layers together to create a blanket out of the used clothes.
By purchasing this blanket you are helping to keep the spirit & craft of each West Bengali village alive.
